Does anyone know of any good software to extract audio from DVD's?

I actually just want certain portions, like spoken audio, not music.

i dont see why you wouldnt be able to record that too. unless you are talking about a part where this is music and dialogue and you are trying to separate it...

I suppose you could rip the audio and try to pull it apart.
I know VLC will transcode the audio. That's what I generally use.
There's a DVD ripping program called Handbrake for mac that I've used before. I think it'll pull just audio. Can't remember
There's also a program for PC called DVDShrink.
Let us know if you have any success pulling just the dialog. I anticipate limited results. But you might be able to play with it using Ableton's utility plugin.

Haven't producers wanted to do this since the beginning of sampling? I always thought finding samples without background music was just part of the hunt.

Audio Hijack
...just use the demo version
and set it to "System Audio"
It will only let you record ten minutes of audio at a time, though :(

Hero I'm pretty sure VLC media player will do this on PC and Handbrake will do it on mac. I dont have it installed right now or I'd check it out.

you can do like disko said. use the RCA cables and record whatever you want in.
then you can use audacity to extract the vocals from the music.
its not hard to do at all.

I used SoundForge to rip the audio from The Matrix for 'The Architect' track I did. You can set time parameters, so you're not ripping/loading the entire disc. Works like buttah.

that works well too
I used soundforge to rip vocals on a superbad tune I made. believe it or not, but the vocals sounded great in quality.

Well, they should... you're ripping from DVD and you can save direct to WAV or AIFF... there's no conversion to MP3 needed.

yup!
I always liked using Goldwave and its free. Not sure if its the way it was back in teh day but you could do 150 commands and then have to save your work, close the program, and start it up again. But really versatile program IMO.
