Audioshell for windows. I've been using it for years now.

Once installed, Just right-click on the file in windows and click properties. Audioshell tag editor is right there. Does album art too, which I noticed some do not.

32bit only at the moment though.

Someone explain to me in simple terms what these programs do for you. I have like 16,000 MP3s and I am wondering how something like this would be beneficial to me.

When you play a file in Winamp, it loads the artist name, track title, album name (plus lots of other data you can add) and even album art, REGARDLESS of how the file is named on your hard drive. It's called ID3 data.

It's really only beneficial if you're using something like Traktor or Serato, but it can clean up your collection if you just listn to music. It would take some time, though... it's meant more for fixing bad tags and tagging MP3s you make (like what I do for Depth). I use MP3Tag (at the link Derrick posted) to encode all the MP3 files for Depth Recordings.

Generally helps keep things more uniform & better organized.

That way you don't end up with 2 albums by 'The Clash' and 1 by 'Clash, The' or 'Souxsie and the Banshees' vs 'Souxsie & The Banshees' or random slight misspellings/accent differences, which end up leaving you with more folders than you need and your files scattered over multiple locations.

Can also fill in some missing info like release year or album artist (having the album artist missing from some tracks on an album will tend to mess with the play order), as well as removing extraneous tag info (like album artist tags when not coupled with an album name).

I mean, if you don't see an immediate need, then you're probably fine leaving well enough alone, but I find it nicer to have a well-structured & consistent system in place.

I'm a bit anal with how I like my mp3s renamed, I like to add the label as well as the release date. What I do is edit the tags and then select everything and match the file name to what I have in my tags.

Yeah, I would mos def like to clean up my music library, as it's pretty much a mess right now. I use iTunes, and I do notice how much of my music is kinda goofy, where I will have albums by "Beatles, The", "The Beatles", "Beatles" for example. So I take it something like this would sort that out.

Now, do I have to do this like one file at a time, or could I have it run and scrub my entire music library?

Or...am I completely missing the point here, haha.

You can do it FOLDER at a time, but depending on the program (I'll use MP3Tag for example), you have to edit a tag/file, then save it... so the process can take some time on large collections.

There are some tagging programs that can write the ID3 tag, based on the file name/folder name, but that's hit or miss. iTunes works good, but I like the other freeware options, as they seem to be more versatile.
