View Full Version : REPUTATION POINTS

In case none of you noticed, there's a green box on the right of your profile. It's called rep points and arguably one of the most abused features on vbulletin.

You can add positive or negative points by clicking on the scale icon and you can add comments about why you approve or disapprove of what someone said.

IMO, the admins should REQUIRE a person to have their name attached (a back-end function of the plugin, from what I'm told) or completely turn it off... I've seen flame-wars turn into trash sessions with tons of neg reps. The anonymous aspect of the feature is a real wedge in the community we're all here for. If you want to see how bad it can get, I'll show you some of the neg shit I've received on the PNW board that allows anonymous rep points. I've received some fun ones.

yeah, it can get kinda weird sometimes.. they had it on a cigar board i frequent but due to exactly what you are talking about it was turned off..

good call. we had it turned off before but we also had vb when that was still an infant feature and thought it was lame. kept it on for now to see how it'd be used. thank you for your input, i'll look for a rep mod... :)

ANd those are the 'nice' ones. They can get A LOT worse and if mods don't police them (as they don't on this above board), some can be downright libelous.

I thought about it, but they're all PERSONAL attacks, which is one of the very problems with the system, IMO. What pissed me off the most is that the mods refused to tell me who said the personal attack crap or take action on them. Some of it was straight up threatening. No me gusta.

Yeah, I'd turn those off. The only time I've seen positive come out of those is on a board where everybody is super close and were all on one another's Christmas card lists. So all things considered, probably not a good idea for this board.

1 street sripe = 39.7 rave cred, with a given amount of market fluctuation.

Street sripes are definitely on the rise...I traded in about 15k rave cred a couple months back, and if I were to exchange now, I'd have like 32k rave cred.

Street sripes = booming business. It's like investing in gold.

We've got these on another board and they have it set up so user rep +/- doesn't have any impact until a certain # of posts have been reached (50 I think) to avoid people just making new accounts and handing out a shitload of neg rep to people.

Also the names are hidden for general users, but people what donate to the site are able to see who sent/took points.

Who will take the title of "rep whore" I wonder?

i agree but unfortunatley people band together in little cliques or big cliques and people with balls get castrated by these groups when they speak out against it or one of it's members.

people who are a part of such a group imo are the ones who need to man up a bit rather than hiding behind their little network of protection from ridicule.

imo if u can't take criticism buy a plastic bubble lock yourself inside it and roll on

If only in a perfect world... (I 100% agree with you btw)

But this is about trying to keep the peace with this new community and not psycho analyzing on how everyone should correctly respond to criticism.

Sadly, on an internet forums, negativity can be amplified by a huge magnitude, due to the anonymity it provides. The rep system will only makes it worse. I've seen it time and time again...

It's one thing to respond to proper criticism, but more often then not, with a rep system, it's only abused and serves no beneficial purpose.

Only thing I've ever seen a rep system do that could be concieved as positive, is e-bragging rights and extension of ones e-peen. ;)
