Alright so I could have sworn I saw a thread somewhere else about this but I cant find it now so here it goes. What is the industry standard for midi controlled keyboards? Something comparable to Pioneers CDJ's, Technics turntables (RIP) you get the jizz.

Also, what company has good price/quality ratio's on these things, and finally, what is the fanciest, shiniest, Steve Aokiest midi keyboard that comes with all the bling?

I would have to say the new M-Audio, or Korg make really nice keyboards with tons of options. I just picked up the Korg Kontrol 49 here from a member and i'm really happy with it. I think most other keyboards are gonna cost you a pretty penny.

Yeah, that korg control 49 looks nice, but if I got something to replace my m-audio I'd probly save up for a novation mk2 or similar.

huhm, based on how much i see them around i would say "standard" would be the m-audio triggerfinger/MPC style touchpad:

for shiny happiest i'm sure there are other options out there but i like the novation x-station:

seems to me that the answer is self-evident: there is no standard. there are so many options and so many different ways people use them that it wouldn't make sense to have one controller to rule them all.

something w/ lots of knobs & sliders.

yeah. theres not really a standard with midi controllers. just try out a lot of different ones and go with what fits your needs and works for what you want to do. with midi there are just so many options that there will probably never be a dominant standard like techs or cdj1000s.

I agree, its pretty much preference and what you want to do with it.

In my book the Korg kontrol 49 is more than I need at the moment. ha

The x-station that Dis=co suggested is actually a hard synth, a midi controller, AND an audio interface all in one.

I've always wanted one, myself

i'll probably go with analog just cuz i like the old sounds better than all the new digital.

i havn't started looking though it'll be a few months i think before i'm even ready to get into it at all

MIDI is the standard... its just a number system to tell the computer how to make music. So, whatever you're comfortable with a big keyboard or just a lil guy... I would say just like any other audio equip purchase, research what will help you most and run with that but don't cheap out... the cool thing is most midi instruments don't produce their own sounds so their pretty cheep to start. If your using ableton there's really one you need though.... Akai Professional APC40

I always thought it would be cool to have midi foot pedals or something to control Ableton. It's cute to have 100 knobs & sliders, but I mean you only have 2 hands...

No such thing as 'standard'.. everyone uses different shit differently. Hawtin's 909 contraption is a prime example. I've got an Oxygen 8 and an MPD24... that's all ya need to make shit happen in Ableton (or Traktor for that matter)

Thanks for all the reply's guys! That Novation looks pretty hot, but I wanna see more shiny stuff, like, if I was in a UFO or something, I wanna be sorrounded by lights! Also, in the future I would like to use Reason more than anything, the program just has so much potential, any good keyboards for that?

oxygen8 has an in for sustain pedals, i'd assume lots of other keyborg controllers would have this

maybe you could assign the pedal(s) to whatevz makes your heart happy?

I have done some more research and it came down to the Novation X-station 49 and the Akai mpk61. I am pretty sure I will settle for the X-station because I dont think I will need the pad or extra keys of the mpk. The Novation just has better sound output options and more control from what I can tell. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the normal version and B stock, I found a cheap one here but it's called b stock for some reason.

Akai has some great products if you have the cash... But you can easily get the same results from an m-audio Trigger finger and an m-audio oxygen 49 as you will with an mpd and an mpk from akai at a fraction of the price

I have one final question, can Reason make dubstep quality bass? I want to make dub house :D

Whodafux

any program really...

Reason
Pro Tools
Logic
Ableton
Cubase
etc.

Even FL studio can be used in the process of making all sorts of professional grade tunes.

ableton for the win imo tho

Actually I believe they dont make the trigga finger anymore (wish they did)

The TriggerFinger sucks and I would wholeheartedly advice against it, along with most other M-Audio midi devices.

The need to install their Enigma software to operate correctly is bollocks, and even when you do, I still found it to be buggy.

I know that not everyone has had problems, though. Just my experience. I doubt I'll ever buy anything M-Audio again

Ohh yeah, I totally forgot about that, I think thats one of the reasons I traded up from m audio in the first place.

I'm working with all Novation stuff right now. I've had a ReMOTE 25 2-Octave for about five years, and it still kicks ass, no bugs, nothing broken after some medium-heavy use.

I just picked up a ReMOTE ZeRO SL MKII and a Launchpad. Basically covers all my needs. The OG 25 will be my synth controller, the ZeRO for all my other plugins, and the Launchpad for Live gigging and drum machine work. All in all, dropped a bit of loot for it, but over the course of 5 years, it's not too bad.

That Zero is sexy, and surprisingly portable. I kinda wish I had gotten it over my SL25 MKII
