the vsts will learn controls on it just fine but the Ableton wont let me map things. When I click the midi mapping button everything will turn blue but when I click on those to pap them to the controller nothing happens

wtf?

make sure your controller is on before you open ableton. you may need to sync it as an external device too. go into options > preferences > midi sync and make sure it's listed as a control surface.

Also ensure you are on the right midi channel. Example - if you had an axiom 25, you would need to be on channel 16 for ableton, preset 19 for the optimal learn. This is something that is changed on the actual midi controller.

Apologies if you have already done this, just throwing out things that screwed me up when i started to get into midi.

In the preferences under midi/sync theres 3 options for every midi device "on" "sync" and "remote" if you wanna use the device for parameter change make sure everything is on and remote... sync I'm not sure about but I have them on too so I dont think it will hurt but I bet thats some midi clock bs

if your control device is listed in the built in devices click it there.... also verify ableton is picking up the incoming midi signal by the yellow flash int he top right corner when you hit a key

Dr. U,

Close ableton, and turn off your midi controller.
Turn your midi controller back on, but hold down the + and - buttons under the LCD display as you turn the switch on, releasing the buttons once the controller is on.

This will restore it to the default parameters and your problem should be solved, assuming that all other settings (like the ones mentioned above) are properly set.
