View Full Version : New Studio build

It's fun being able to build your new studio from scratch. Just so you get things just the way you want them. It's still in the construction stages. It will have 2 audio stations and 2 video stations, 1 main vocal booth, a second recording room for guitar amps, drums etc., a green screen, photo room, lounge, kitchen and storage areas. Note the brand new HD, remote cam system with night vision. There will be 3 layers of sound proofing and an air layer in the walls dividing the separate rooms. I will post more as the place gets built. I really dig having skylights in both studios.

I will seal all the seams last at the same time. I still have some framing work to finish before I can finish the soundproofing and drywalling. I have done every phaze of construction, built about 5 studios for myself and a few studios for other people. I also used to work for a custom furniture company and I have built all kinds of custom studio furniture, so it will be done right, (but the way I want it). The main vocal booth will be able to be patched in, in both studios. We will have an, in-wall patchbay next to each mixing board. We totally need 2 separate work spaces. Both will have 1 audio and 1 video editing station. Right now, it's about time to make another run to HomeDepot. We are almost out of materials.

We have both noticed that we walk around the room a lot while doing projects. Mostly because of speaker placement and to hear the room. It's nice to have a screen that can be seen around the room. It's also cool when you use a wireless mouse or keyboard. Things right now are still being moved around, nothings to permanent yet. I have to figure out a few things like bass trap placement, speaker placement and so on. My studio will have a rear projection screen on the wall that divides my room and the lounge area, so that way it can be seen on from both rooms. Of course one side will be reversed. When your mixing movies, the big screens give you a good idea right then on how it will look on a computer monitor, projected screen and a home consumer level flat screen that will do 1080p, etc. Plus, it just looks cool.

I still haven't added the sound treatment to the main listening room cuz I have been busy with the main vocal booth. But I just got the T-racks 3 deluxe and wanted to check it out. So I set up a temporary lil roll around rack just to play with the program. It's pretty kick ass. I usually dont like using software plug ins, and I didn't like the original T-racks, but this program gets kick ass reviews. It's supposedly has one of the most realistic reproductions of the Fairchild and the Pultec EQ. I personally don't know how accurate it is, but the sound is very colored from them. The Optocompressor is super transparant and good sounding. Linear phase EQ rocks.
Still have a ton of painting to do along with room treatments. (The hoop is not mine.)

WAVERUNNER
12-24-2009, 12:58 PM
That last pik is the inside roof of the main vocal booth, from the floor looking up. All of the walls are off just a few degrees so there is no parallel walls. We decided not to make the ceiling flat. There is going to be 3 main vocal mics for 3 different sounds. The booth is large enough for 2 people to do vocals with room to spare. I wanted it big enough to roll in a marshall half stack if I needed to. Still have to finish the side walls.

the cord hanging down is from the headphones.

It always takes longer than expected, but you can't rush perfection. I'm constantly rebuilding my setup. I still have a few pieces of foam to put in and the new mics, when they arrive, but you can see what is going on. The video monitor in the booth shows what is going on to the vocalist, so this way, they know what verse they are on, or when something is coming up. There is a selector switch to see either studio. Either room can punch and record the booth, 2 completely different setups.
I built a quick little rack for my main audio computer, that can roll out, if I need to rewire something. It has it's own power supply and rear fans. If anyone ever needs any help building a studio, I have done quite a few, including all the studio furniture. I done some dope setups for some rich people in Texas. My personal setup, is more or less, get it done, do what works. When I build for other people, I will do fine wood work, and gloss all the surfaces. I used to work for a custom shop, and I learned a lot, from guys who had been building for 30 years plus.
I get a flat $20 /hour. You pay for materials.
Mastering room is next. Hopefully this will all be done soon, so I can start work on my full length solo album. But I kinda realized, you are never really done, until your dead.

WAVERUNNER
03-27-2010, 08:10 PM
It's a ribbon. At the time, I just needed a vocal mic that didn't require phantom power. Most old ribbons, require phantom, but if you send phantom to this one, it blows up. Also, they are super fragile, and you cannot store them horizontally. I actually like it tho, it is a very clean, full range mic. Larger mics always capture more bottom end, but a ribbon doesn't add anything like a cardiod would. I'm actually ordering a cardiod that will be mounted right next to it, and one more mic. Not sure what yet. I like to capture multiple recordings of vocals in one take. Maybe run, one through effects, and one clean. The mics hanging, are omnidirectional and have a large pick up area. I will sometimes use them for the surround sound effect. But, yea, the nady is a good buy, just don't drop it.

What program is that on your moniters? Is it the main one you use?

WAVERUNNER
03-31-2010, 09:14 PM
The program you see is Motu's Digital Performer. I use it because it is the most solid for audio and midi side by side. I have basically everything on the market, at least one version or another, but I like DP. It's just a matter of preference.

The other room runs mainly Neundo OS9. I also have OSX neundo, Peak 6, T-racks 3 deluxe, Protools OS9, Ableton 5-8, Rebirth, Reason, Final Cut Pro, Premier, adobe audition, Cubase, Retro AS-1, Logic, and a lot more, but I don't use them all the time.

Since most of the first studio is al most done. We are officially starting the second. Right now it is a mess, nothing is in it's permanent place. I have everything pulled away from the wall for wiring reasons. I pulled some units from the racks already and changed others. The behringer mic pres were the first thing I pulled. They were not my idea, and they sounded like total shit. A few units went in for repair and a few more were just purchased. The studio monitors will go all the way around the room when it is complete, 5 sets in all. One wall will be all keyboards. I just got all the electrical straight last week. The mixing board is a fully restored Allen and Heath Brennal System 8 MKIII, the G5 runs Digital Performer 7, logic 8, Live and a few others. More pics to come as it is built.

Whatever equipment is not used after the build will be sold in a studio sale after all is done. I have quite a bit of extra stuff.

I produce whatever pays. However, I'm so overloaded with projects, I have started only taking on artist that I see have a lot of potential. I've done a lot of metal, a few country, tons of rap, (because thats what most people do), and a lot of electronica. The second studio is in aurora is owned by a hip hop and R&B label, I am the main tech, I get to design and build it, then fly the ship, another dude writes the check. Half of the gear in the rack has already been switched out. I'm just going to build both places, and whatever doesn't get used will be sold.

Very nice dude, sounds like alot of work but alot of fun at the same. What kinda proofing is that using in the booth? I've never seen that white material before. I've got a booth that needs moar sound proofing but Auralex is getting expensive and egg cartons just won't do it. lol I've got a mic that picks up every little echo/ vibration..

WAVERUNNER
06-23-2011, 05:20 PM
My booth is 1" thick plywood, 2 layers of 5/8ths sheetrock, 2 layers of moving blankets, then a bunch of packing foam. The white foam is the cheap bedding foam from walmart. It will eventually all be replaced because if turns yellow really fast. Ive updated the booth a few times. The door has a foam layer around the door and is held shut with 5 magnets to prevent any vibration. The door is made from an exterior sliding glass door that has 2 layers of glass. It knocks down about 90% of the outside noise. I mostly have the problem of the mics picking up the headphones, but it's so minute, it's not a major problem, I'll just get better isolation headphones. I just installed new Sterling Audio mics in the booth. I can record 3 different mics in one take of the same vocal.

RanThrive
06-24-2011, 05:15 PM
That booth sound bullet proof..hah I really like the magnet idea for the door, sounds efficient. I live in an apartment so I can't really do too much adjusting since my closet is the booth. I just would like to add a bit moar sound proofing but can't really spend money on the good shit. Egg cartons are worthless imo. Maybe I'll go check out some of that foam from walmart.
