BREAKING NEWS
LARIMER COUNTY - Officials in Larimer County are actively searching for a child who literally floated away from his family's home on an experimental aircraft.
According to the Larimer County Sheriff's Department, the 6-year-old boy's family had been building an experimental aircraft which had a large helium balloon attached at their home on Fossil Ridge Road in Fort Collins.
On Thursday morning, according to the family and officials, the boy got onto the aircraft and detached the rope holding it in place.
The aircraft is described by the sheriff's office as a dome-shaped, 20 foot, 5 foot aircraft covered with foil.
Viewer Lisa Eklund sent photos of an aircraft in the air near her home on Saturn Drive, also in Fort Collins.
The Federal Aviation Administration is working to track the aircraft on its radar tower and has notified the Denver International Airport.
The Weld County Sheriff's Office says the boy was last seen two miles south of Evans, near County Road 46 and Highway 85.
9NEWS and Sky9 are following this story and will continue to provide updates as they are available.

a little bit of both.
if the kid is having fun, then he could be our next lindbergh.
the fact that he was able to take off in it, easily, is the parent's fault.
i feel a little bad for them. hope the kid survives. yeesh.

NASA used to use helium ballons for weather research, since helium, being lighter then air can go all the way up into the stratosphere.
Depending on how much helium is in this balloon, this could end very badly for the kid if it gets too high. All tho with all the cold air, it probably won't travel to high in altitude.
Really all they can do is track it, then try to shoot it down slowly with a pellet gun.

Honestly, watching this live video, I don't see where the kid would be. I would think, since the materiel in helium or hot air balloons is extremely pliable, you'd see a indentation of where the kid is sitting inside.... I'm not seeing it.
I bet he already fell out, or the kid never got in there in the first place.

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flown all around
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I flew in a ballon filled with hot air.
In... west Colorado born and raised
in the backyard is where I spent most of my days
soarin and swoopin all cool
and flyin a balloon instead of bein in school
when a couple of tethers
were up to no good
made me fly up out my neighborhood
Went on one little flight and my dad got scared
said "My sons in that basket up in the air"
So.. whistled for a chopper and when it came near
The side said 'Channel 9' and it had guys in there
If anything i could say that this situation was rare,
but i thought ' ah forget it, jump out, no care.'
I landed on the ground from about over 9000 or 8
and yelled to the news crew "yo homes, find me later"
Looked all around me, I was finally there,
to sit in my basket as the king of hot air.

This "vehicle" is a 3D LAV, or low altitude vehicle, which is powered by a plasma field, generated by the metal outter covering, resulting in 1million volts of electricity. The video explains it best......

it's official, the gene pool is drying up, the next generation is destined to be completely retarded... maybe the idea of removing all healthcare and letting natural selection work things out isn't such a bad idea. I'd say it's about time to thin the herd.

Dude, that family is weird. Kid makes nat'l news, acts like a retard while his parents are parading around the cameras acting like, "oh lil' Falcon, you are such a goofball." Then lil' kid calls out his family on cnn saying he did it for the 'show', whatever that means :\

FORT COLLINS - <!-- P2P_LIVE_EDIT "content_item_dateline_preview" END --> BREAKING NEWS: Fort Collins police are drawing up search warrants and preparing charges against the family that caused a national stir when their UFO-shaped weather balloon got loose Thursday.
Sheriff says criminal charges will be filed.
Richard Heene left the Fort Collins police station Saturday night without making a comment. Police announced shortly after that they would be persuing criminal charges but they did not clarify whom they were persuing nor what charges would be filed.

unfortunately, the charges will most likely be misdemeanors, so no jail time, but still, should be pretty hefty fines and such. granted, if it turns out the parents helped talk the kids into this, I'm hoping they'll figure out a way to change charges to child endangerment/neglect, something along those lines and make them take some parenting classes, so maybe they'll think about setting a good example for the kids vs drumming up publicity for a reality tv show appearance...

Watching it live right now... Sheriff says they can't comment on if they got a confession or if a polygraph test was done and what the results were... and that there is a ongoing investigation and they have not yet filled criminal charges.
But they feel at some point they will bring forth charges to the DA and a few of the charges will be felony's.
But at the moment, they don't quite have enough evidence to pursue it in full yet.

GOOD. I read a subsequenty story that they were going to be charged with: Conspiracy, Contributing to the Deliquency of a Minor and Filing a False Police Report.
Dumbshit did this because he wanted to get some fame and be a reality TV star? Ug. Why is it these 'reality TV stars' are the biggest attention whores out there and will sell an appendage to get on TV, no matter how embarassing the show?

LMGTFY - I've seen these seagulls. "Seagull" is a misnomer.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080203071117AApr6jG
there really is no such thing as a "seagull". there are many species of gulls (herring, black-backed, california) and they are 100% opportunistic scavengers. anywhere there is surface water and a food source, there will be gulls of some kind. consider this; the state bird of utah is the california gull, which are incidentally the same kind you are most likely to see here in colorado as well. also, many gulls can survive and breed in arctic climates and migrate great distances inland to escape the greater cold up north. the cold of colorado is less harsh than they can survive.

Only a reject state like Utah would name their state bird a bird with another state's name in it.
Even California doesn't have that as a state bird... but they did choose something with the word California in it.
