Just wanted to post about the burn this year, I suspect many locals might be playing or going. It would be nice to know where you are and what is going on. I've been three years, and it's unbelievable.

Top three reasons why Burning Man threads on SW5 are funny:

A. Most of the posts come from people who haven't gone and aren't going
2. Those who are going just post that their excited
M. There will be at least one person who will try to explain why its awesome and it changed their life only to be ridiculed by those who have no intention of ever going.

Pretty close..

The main difference is BM is not put on by anyone on SW5 so people don't hold back comments like they do sometimes when the person who puts on the party is actually posting the event..

Nice Ben.

Really pumped..... like every year.

One of my closest friends James Regent was awarded one of the Honorarium art grants this year (all your ticket moniez are belong to us!). I am extremely happy to be helping build the project and getting it installed in the desert.

THe piece is an interactive sound installation called "Intersection" and should be located around 3:30 and 1600 feet from the man (middle ground between Esplanade and man).

check out this write up (and donate :D) if you are curious.

Yeah, don't go. I hear they are changing the name to "Boring Man" after this year. Someone sued them for false advertising. Really, it's just a bunch of sweaty, dirty hippies taking acid and running around naked in the desert. Totally overrated.

While I think there is a few smelly people who are to far gone....

My first year I came to BM I had the same impression. I thought it was going to be a bunch of drugged out hippies preaching free love and trying to channel Timothy Leary.

What I found was mostly professionals and very intelectual people. Doctors, Lawyers, IT people. Really it was an interactive art festival and rave for adults. No 15yr olds raving, a bunch of 25+ adults taking a week off from the real world enjoying art and the best beats around.

I loved it. Best fucking vacation I've every had. For one week a year I get to go out and be whomever the fuck I want, everyone watches out for each other, and it's game on with some of the best EDM on the planet.

After a year of B.S. it will be nice to take a week off from the ROID Jocks, Yuppies, and Gangbangers, not mention reality ;)

the only thing that concerns me is the heat....how did u guys who went learn to cope with that...i was going to go but the person i was supposed to be going with is too much of a last minute planner and i like to have things ready to go....especially when living in harsh conditions for a week....that just prooves going to man is about being proactive and not reactive

I totally respect all the hard work that goes into the art projects for the burn, and the scale of some of these projects blows my fucking mind. But going to party in the desert for a week is hardly my idea of fun. I do not like the heat, and I love to shower. I figure if I'm gonna spend the money to go out of town for a party, I'd much rather be pampered in luxury at WMC or go over to Europe and check out that scene. Plus, I don't think I could handle a week of mostly dubstep. I think it also ties in with ones love of camping. Some people like roughing it, and what rougher place to live than the desert?

This is exactly how I feel about BM. I would love to go sometime for the experience but I just cant stand being in the dessert in heat for a week straight. I would have to rent an RV no question about it.

@Paulo That is super awesome! I didn't realize you guys got some prime real estate.. Nice work!

@Ray it's really not that hard. You just need a good shade structure and it really isn't that bad.. Your best bet, is to come with people who have been before and see what they have for shade and use that this year when you need to crash and its hot (still have your own private area though) then plan your own next year.. The invitation to camp with us is still open, by the way.. We'd love to have you and there's plenty of shade in our little crew to crash out under.

Some how you are all correct though. It sucks, don't go. WMC is way better.. It's hot, dusty, people are rude, you can't escape the heat, there is non stop music that you hate, saggy tits and cocks flapping everywhere..

I love hearing stories of peoples experiences @ BM. And the pics are always really sweet.

The pictures are all CG and the stories are made up.

Everyone who goes gets a pamphlet on the way out with stories to tell and computer generated images of the "playa". If you pay extra you can get your face put on the images..

The real thing sucks. It's just part of the marketing strategy to tell cool stories and show cool pictures..

Exactly right, Ben. It's really a scam. All of the "art" you see is CGI. Really what happens is we drive out, check into a hotel in Reno, and split up all of the ticket money.

Them we rub talcum powder on ourselves, drive home, and talk about "The Playa" for a year.

Don't go. It sucks. It's too hot, they only play dubstep, its a bunch of hippies, and all you see everywhere you look is a sea of cocks in all directions.

The other story he told me that makes me laugh everytime.

He and my other friend decided to take large quantities of hallucinogens and go on a really really long bike ride. Well they're riding for hours and some dude starts riding with them. They think nothing of it and the 3 of them are cruising along for hours and not talking, just pretty much tripping and riding. So finally after hours go by the dude who was riding with them goes "hey Tommy, things are starting to look a little funny now". my friends (jordan and aaron) both look at each other like who the fuck is this guy talking to? And the dude looks over to my friend aaron and has a startled look on his face and says "hey you're not tommy" and turns around and rides off back into the playa. lol

my boy aaron said he started laughing so hard that he totally crashed his bike. I guess they laid on the playa and laughed hysterically for a very long time

hahaha awesome..

Similar story and context..

A friend and I were riding around in a similar state to the guys in this story and a dust storm hit.. So we got off our bikes and started walking them because the wind was so strong we couldn't ride against it.

We get to an intersection and this girl is crossing the intersection who was all bundled up because of the dust storm. For whatever reason, my friend and I were *totally* convinved this was our friend Summer.

We started yelling "SUMMER!!!" louder and louder. Finally the girl stops and starts looking around like "WTF??!?!" we keep walking closer and closer yelling "SUMMER!" only to realize, it wasn't Summer at all.. It was just some other short chick who was really confused by us yelling Summer..

In the same bike ride, we were walking and the visibility had gotten really bad... Maybe 6' or so visiblity and 30+ mph winds. Gnarly stuff..

Then all of the sudden this 250lb+ fat dude on a little tiny pink girls bike (like for a 5 year old) comes ZIPPING between us full speed AGAINST the wind only to dissapear in the dust a few feet later.. Sooo funny..

Ha! I was camped right near that bus in 08. It has the LOUDEST air horn I have ever heard. The driver of the bus saw me sleeping passed out in a camp chair right on the road one night (just asking to be fucked with really). Pulled the white beast up slowly and literally blew me out of my chair.

Every one is right. I think I am going to take my ticket and sell it to some shumck for $400.

Burning man is not fun at all. There is absolutely no way to bring a shower or to bathe in any sort of way. Deodorant is not allowed through the gates so it is guaranteed that every one smells like total shit.

You are also not allowed to bring shade or any sort or cooling devices or even generators to run an A.C. unit either. You are totally made to suffer in the heat.

AND the ONLY music is dub step. dub step 24/7. Most certainly no techno or break beats or live bands playing anywhere. And all the booze and drugs are WAY overpriced!

I really don't know why I wasted all my money in past years......

How commercial has it become?

in 1986 it had 20 participants, in 2009 it had 43,000 or so. This years I'm sure will be bigger with stars from around the world coming to live out their hedonistic impulses.

What happened to the raw spiritualism is stood for? Nah, Eff that, next thing you know they will be selling merchandise there.

Not sure what you mean by this. The only thing you can actually buy at the event is ice and coffee, the proceeds of which go to the local school district

Although some people do barter, it's frowned upon by the organizers. The entire event is intended to be a gift economy

My point is, all this big names are being brought in to play these shows, and some of these names I know their normal booking fees and I know that burning man isn't there thing, so I'm curious as to how they took the gig or had the gig offered too them.

In short, as this spiritual get away gets bigger and bigger it's losing more and more of it's purpose and simply becoming a week long excuse to act the fool.

LOL at it being commercial. Commercial compared to what, exactly? There is still no money changing hands (excluding the aforementioned coffee and ice), no advertising, no private sale of goods, and there never will be. Sure it's probably not what it used to be for those who have been there through its whole evolution, but it's still a damn amazing event.

One of the biggest sound camps, Opulent Temple, had a whole long blog post about how it chooses its DJ talent, and much of it is based off of the DJs' desire to play at their camp; this includes big names like Carl Cox, Meat Katie, Elite Force, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Dan, etc. As far as I know they have never paid anyone to DJ there.

Believe it or not, these people find it gratifying enough just to play, and many of them are expected to play at one of the camp fundraisers throughout the year (outside of the burn), in order to earn a timeslot!

I see a bunch of alarmist, pot-calling-the-kettle-black behavior in this thread. Sheesh.

And further, who said it's supposed to be spiritual? Maybe it is for some, but I think people are missing the point. It's myopic, you're seeing it for what you want it to be (or not be), and you're fixating on that single aspect. It's not a fucking rave, that's for sure. You reduce anything down to discrete elements, like the music, or the fact that there are SOME hippies there, or ravers, or whatever the hell you want to focus on, and then sure, you'll find something to ridicule.

Citrus pretty much nailed it. Most (if not all) the big name DJs that play the event are already camping and participating and are not doing it for just another booking fee. Anyone performing for money goes against the entire idea behind BM, honestly

The small group we are camping with this year had Lee Burridge stop by the night of the man burn last year and played an afterhours set, just because

This BBQ is not affiliated with any specific camps, so any and all people going to BM are welcome. This is just a way for people to connect on last minute prep stuff and find out where friends are camping.

Yeah, don't go. I hear they are changing the name to "Boring Man" after this year. Someone sued them for false advertising. Really, it's just a bunch of sweaty, dirty hippies taking acid and running around naked in the desert. Totally overrated.

Obviously you've never been to burning man.

Just got a Playa conditions report:

This just in from a Ranger on post at BRC. Conditions of the playa right now. Reposted with permission.

The playa this year is, well, very playa-like. There's nothing
extraordinary about the conditions this year, but if you're curious
about what exactly to pack for, here's what we're living in out here:

The mornings are chilly and getting chillier, with comfortable heat
setting in around 8 am. The days are warm and calm, with mandatory
siesta temperatures between 1 and 4 pm. We've gotten intermittent
clouds and breezes, enough to work through. The nights are temperate
through midnight, with the bone chilling cold setting in around 2 am.
It would be really dusty if it were windier. No rain, occasional
lightning.

We had out first real whiteout yesterday and it was a doozy. It was
caused by the same system that hit the entire west coast and the
influx of people for Early Man. If it's any indication for Monday of
the event, it'll be a dusty one. Bring a good mask and a willingness
to play marco-polo inside your shade structure.

The playa is full of moon dust; not as bad as 2008 but bad enough to
make this a walking year. The 3:00 side is flatter, the 9:00 side is
thicker. Gate road dusts out the 3:00 side a lot more. The locals
driving the fence line at 50 mph dust out everyone. (Perimeter is
putting a stop to that today.)

Socially the city is very, very happy. The crews are working well
together, everything is going up well, everyone is pretty happy with
each other's company. You're going to a city built with love and
care.

I'll finish this before I lapse into sentimentality. I hope you're
all doing well and I look forward to seeing you when you get here.
Have a safe, uneventful trip.

Yeahhhhh, have them bring $100 in cash each to me.. ;)

Nah, thats what makes it Unofficial Vigilante.. No centralization, no organization, just people camping together and having fun..

We will have a large shade structure and a tiny lil DJ setup, too..

We are taking a year off from theme camp stuff, so we are keeping it very simple and no cost.. We have a good smattering of virgins (at least 5, prolly more) as well as plenty of veterans, so it'll be a good mix..
