Renate Raymond has encountered her fair share of organic food snobs, but a recent trip to a Seattle market left her feeling like she'd stumbled onto the set of "Portlandia."
"I stopped at a market to get a fruit platter for a movie night with friends but I couldn't find one so I asked the produce guy," says the 40-year-old arts administrator from Seattle. "And he was like, 'If you want fruit platters, go to Safeway. We're organic.' I finally bought a small cake and some strawberries and then at the check stand, the guy was like 'You didn't bring your own bag? I need to charge you if you didn't bring your own bag.' It was like a 'Portlandia skit.' They were so snotty and arrogant."

As it turns out, new research has determined that a judgmental attitude may just go hand in hand with exposure to organic foods. In fact, a new study published this week in the journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science, has found that organic food may just make people act a bit like jerks.

"There's a line of research showing that when people can pat themselves on the back for their moral behavior, they can become self-righteous," says author Kendall Eskine, assistant professor of the department of psychological sciences at Loyola University in New Orleans. "I've noticed a lot of organic foods are marketed with moral terminology, like Honest Tea, and wondered if you exposed people to organic food, if it would make them pat themselves on the back for their moral and environmental choices. I wondered if they would be more altruistic or not."

To find out, Eskine and his team divided 60 people into three groups. One group was shown pictures of clearly labeled organic food, like apples and spinach. Another group was shown comfort foods such as brownies and cookies. And a third group -- the controls -- were shown non-organic, non-comfort foods like rice, mustard and oatmeal. After viewing the pictures, each person was then asked to read a series of vignettes describing moral transgressions.

"One vignette was about second cousins having sex," says Eskine. "Another was about a lawyer on the prowl in an ER trying to get people to sue for their injuries. Then the groups made moral judgments on a scale from one to seven."
In another phase of the study, the three groups were asked to volunteer for a (fictitious) study, with each person writing down the amount of time -- from zero to 30 minutes -- that they would be willing to volunteer.

The results did not bode well for the organic folks.
"We found that the organic people judged much harder compared to the control or comfort food groups," says Eskine. "On a scale of 1 to 7, the organic people were like 5.5 while the controls were about a 5 and the comfort food people were like a 4.89."
When it came to helping out a needy stranger, the organic people also proved to be more selfish, volunteering only 13 minutes as compared to 19 minutes (for controls) and 24 minutes (for comfort food folks).

"There's something about being exposed to organic food that made them feel better about themselves," says Eskine. "And that made them kind of jerks a little bit, I guess."
Why does eating better make us act worse? Eskine says it probably has to do with what he calls "moral licensing."
"People may feel like they've done their good deed," he says. "That they have permission, or license, to act unethically later on. It's like when you go to the gym and run a few miles and you feel good about yourself, so you eat a candy bar."

Eskine says he was surprised by the findings ("You'd think eating organic would make you feel elevated and want to pay it forward," he says) and hopes to do additional studies that look at conditions that might prompt people to act differently.
Until then, organic eaters may want to rein in those self-righteous stink-eyes.
"At my local grocery, I sometimes catch organic eyes gazing into my grocery cart and scowling," says Sue Frause, a 61-year-old freelance writer/photographer from Whidbey Island. "So I'll often toss in really bad foods just to get them even more riled up."

In the second installment of the Emote Podcast, we have a great tech house mix from one of the reigning tech house masters in the US right now in Dela, also known to some as Brad Valerine. Dela is currently the head of Paco Osuna's Mindshake label, and has been gigging and globetrotting these last couple of years nonstop. Brad not only took the time to record a mix, but he also sat down with Emote Music's John Templeton for an interview to go along with his podcast mix.

Interview with Dela:

Emote Music: How long have you been working at Mindshake?
Dela: I took the position and accepted the offer from Paco (Osuna) at DEMF in 2010

EM: Who did you sleep with to get your position?
Dela: hahahaha....no one, unfortunately.

BV: There was no shady deal or godfather offer that was made?
Dela: There might be, but then I would have to kill you if I told you.

EM: You have been traveling a lot lately, and have been all over the world. What is the worst bathroom that you have had to use in the last year?
Dela: The worst place I've probably had to take a dump was the Upstairs Lounge in St. Louis, MO, and the worst part about it was that the promoters took me out to either a Thai or Vietnamese food beforehand. I had the volcano chicken, which transcended into Volcano Upstairs Lounge!
EM: Yikes, that poor toilet!
Dela: Yeah, not good.

EM: What is the worst the tech rider or DJ setup that you have seen in the last year?
Dela: There's been quite a few, actually. I don't want to call anyone out, as it's a tough question to answer. One time, me and another Mindshake artist were playing together on the East Coast where the setup was actually facing a wall, and the sound was pretty good, but we were playing on this ancient rotary mixer, which if I remember correctly didn't have a full EQ. I think it had a gain and just one knob, but it was pretty more, and made mixing horrible. Another time, we showed up and it was another Rane, but it was the hip-hop-style, two channel mixer, and there was no room in the booth to put a computer anywhere, to setup, or anything. There was just this tiny booth with two turntables and that little mixer. That was pretty frustrating.

EM: That sounds frustrating. So do you listen to all the of the demos that get sent to Mindshake? Do you filter out the demos?
Dela: Obviously, the well-known names go straight to Paco (Osuna), but everything else goes to me first. I'll tell you right now, my inbox in the last three, four months is roughly at 850 unread emails.

EM: Are those all demo-related?
Dela: Yes, I get about 20-25 a day

EM: And are they mostly crap?
Dela: About 90% of it, but that's not saying they are crap, they normally don't fit what we are doing with the label.

EM: Can you decipher that they are bad demos simply from the introduction in the email?
Dela: No, not at all. Some emails that come off very strange, and are kind of weird have some great demos. Others are written well, and they are saying the right things, but the music is not so good.

EM: You have a young daughter, correct? Would you ever late her date a DJ?
Dela: Uh *Pause* Yes.

EM: Ok then, why would you?
Dela: Well, I would because in my opinion it is an art, and I feel that she is very artistic, and she should be exposed to that art form. And I also don't believe every DJ is bad you know.

EM: Of course not, but the late nights, the parties, the extra curricular activities don't scare you as a father?
Dela: Well, she would definitely have to be of age!

EM: Do you think it is easier for a woman to be a successful as a DJ than a man?
Dela: I think both could be true. But I think it could be hard for a woman considering how much of a man's game it is; to put up with the competitiveness that's involved. I really think you could argue both ways. It could easily break someone who is not ready.

EM: Well said! What do you have coming up this year that you are looking forward to?
Dela: I have an upcoming EP this year on the Argentine label, Pild Records, that I'm really looking forward to, and I've already done a remix for them. Another big single, the one I'm looking forward to releasing the most, actually, is a track that I've written and is coming out on the Colombian label, The Room. I'm heading over to Europe in September as well, so I'm definitely excited about that.

EM: Well that is it. Thank you! Pretty painless, right?
